Chapter 7
7. Software Installation and Tuning
The ISS3000 series of servers can be configured as one of the following:
•Linux
®
server
• Windows
®
server
This chapter describes installation and tuning guidelines for each of these.
Linux Server Configuration
Any variant of Linux can be installed to created a Linux NAS server on the ISS3000 series. SUSE
®
or Red Hat
®
versions are recommended due to overall stability. The following sections will assist
with the installation and tuning of Linux systems. This section assumes a moderate level of Linux
system administration skills.
Operating System Installation
The system may include separate boot drives that are isolated from the RAID array(s). Install the
operating system on the drives that are separate from the drives in the array. When using software
RAID on the data drives, isolate the boot drive from the array.
If there are not any separate boot drives, then install a boot partition (for /boot) on a small part
of one of the RAID volumes (100-200MB is sufficient). Leave the remaining capacity for data.
To create partitions, use a partitioning tool such as parted or fdisk.
